Adding paths.

Downsized navigation grid from 30x30 to 15x15. Controls feel more responsive.
Modified area creation code: less lines and better functionality.

i noticed the character names changed, do you have any updates on the character profiles? (i do enjoy character details as im intersted in incorporating character development in my future games) did nathan still raise and train craig? is there still a romantic connection between craige and flare? and is there still gonna be a time travel element to the story?

also, what is the role of "gigan" in the story(i assume its not a mountain anymore?)

Yeah, I went through a sizable list of Celtic baby names (with meanings) to come up with the new names:

Craig -> Owen (young fighter)
Nathan -> Niall (champion)
Flare -> Arlette (oath)
Ceres -> Evelyn (light)

I have seven more characters to include right now. Their gameplay stats and backstories are ready, I just need to get around drawing their respective sprite sheets.

Their new name meaning pretty much says it. Niall (Nathan) is still village Champion and Owen (Craig) is his son, however the story doesn't start with both set for battle. That comes through village tradition later.

Any relationship (friendship/romance) will form after a number of optional events connected to that certain character.

I had discarded that idea long ago actually. There is a kind of crossing-over however: dreams crossing over to the real world.

I need to find a new name for Gigan. It's still the mountain name, but the title should reference an actual person instead. He's the one who sets the story in motion by releasing said dreams from their respective worlds.

damn dude, seven more characters and optional events? (plus the 30 spell animations) thats alot of work. you sure your not getting carried away? when you start taking things to seriously it takes the fun out of making the game

what effect do formations have?

The new additions are there to spice up the gameplay. I don't want the player to stick with the three canon and one optional characters. Two of those seven are included in the story, the rest are all extras.

Optional events have no impact on the main story. They're there to add depth to, and highlight bonds between characters. It's just some extra work.

Spell animations are easy. The main elements are almost done (they count up to 20).

I am taking this seriously of course, because I want it finished. It's still fun to code, especially knowing many are anticipating a final product, the majority on a local scale. Plus I have nothing better to do during the summer recess xD

Apart from changing character placement, they increase attributes to give the player an edge over the enemy. Some of them also have hidden effects (healing per turn, replenish MP) not listed in the description.

There are currently 10 formations in all.

I've refreshed the sprite sheets for the four established characters, they're still tiny but at least now they're decently colored and lit. I'll spend what's left of the day creating the new characters.

After looking through another ton of baby names, I've found a replacement for the Gigan part in the title. The new title is Chosen : The Legacy of Gaelan.

This move will make sense once I get around posting parts of the story.

It's just a title and besides, this isn't the first change it went through.

Considering the amount of people who will see the demo in just over two months, those who are familiar with the old title are really in a minority.

Here's a screenshot of what the new forest looks like:

Things I plan on adding in the morning:
- Mud/soil patches on the ground.
- A couple of extra tree tiles for variety.

I'll add shadows for the characters, it's just a circle under a sprite. I'm not sure whether doing the same for the trees is a good idea, but I guess it's worth a try.

Last night I managed to finish up the main symbols used for magic:



All Insignia except Atonement and Gate have a higher-order version, though there is no change except in spells.

The remaining seven (so far) Insignia are only for status enhancement and special commands, therefore a symbol is not needed.

A couple of [kinda] major updates:

I've had trouble accessing my own website for a few weeks, but now the problem is solved so I've created a section dedicated entirely to this game here. All the resources intended for public viewing will be displayed there first.

A friend of mine had created a world map some days ago, it's magnificent, but too large to use on one game alone. I've picked one continent where the game will take place, and if the future allows for extensions or sequels, I'll move on to the other locations.

Until then, you are welcome to view Zoroaster here.

On the coding end, I've managed to downsize the navigation grid by half, which means player movement is now more responsive and collision with objects is far more accurate than the previous system.

The dungeon creation functions were improved greatly. I have to input more numbers thanks to the navigation system upgrade, but it's all worth the effort in the end.
